While much of the state was preparing for the championship rounds of many girls’ basketball sectionals on Saturday afternoon, Jasper was the central location of a different kind of postseason as it played host to the annual Indiana High School Athletic Association girls’ swimming sectional.

Swimmers representing Corydon Central, Lanesville and North Harrison first made the trip to Jasper on Thursday for preliminary events. Many of those swimmers advance to Saturday’s finals with a trip to the IHSAA state finals on the line.

Corydon Central placed well in the 15-team field, finishing fourth with a combined score of 214.5 points. Leading that effort was the quartet of Addison Applegate, Megan King, Ella Johnson and Madison Stilwell, who teamed up to finish third in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:55.59, setting the school record in the event for the third time this season. The quartet also did well in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing second in 1:48.76. The squad of Sydney Edwards, Addison Alford, Georgia LaHue and Ava Gerdon rounded out the Lady Panthers’ relay efforts by finishing eighth in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:10.97.

Stilwell had a strong day individually in the finals as she finished second in both the 200-yard (2:01.50) and 500-yard freestyles (5:29.33), while King finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.07) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.34). Johnson followed by finishing third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.51) and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:25.38).

Edwards finished 10th in the 50-yard freestyle (28.11) and 14th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:12.30), while Applegate was 11th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.26) and 12th in the 50-yard freestyle (28.36). LaHue placed 13th in both the 100-yard butterfly (1:14.04) and 100-yard backstroke (1:11.12).

North Harrison finished eighth in the field with a combined score of 126. E.V. Wright, Emily Kintner, Avery Wiseman and Destiny Kays kicked off the Lady Cats’ relay efforts by finishing sixth in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:07.69. Wright, Kays and Wiseman teamed up with Alyssa Johnson to finish seventh in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:22.27, while Johnson worked with Katie Wise, Addelynn Reynolds and Marie Garcia Amate to finish seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:57.78.

Destiny Kays was the Lady Cats’ top individual performer in the finals as she finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (27.55) and ninth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.24), while Wright finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.13) and 16th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:22.09). Johnson followed by finishing 10th in the 500-yard freestyle (6:15.92) and 13th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.47).

Lanesville saw its duo of Maisey and Kassie Zurschmeide put in work at sectional as the former finished seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.52) and 11th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:39.08), while the latter took sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.12) and 10th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.94).
