James P. Byrne


James Paul Byrne, 80, Corydon, Ind., passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023, at Harrison Springs Health Campus in Corydon.
He was born Nov. 1, 1942, in Louisville, Ky., the son of James William and Irma Naomi Ferrell Byrne.
He was a student liaison for the Floyd County school system. He was a lifelong University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan. Paul spent his adulthood coaching area basketball teams at all levels, including much guidance to his children and grandchildren from the stands. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lanesville, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Patricia Ott Byrne.
He is survived by his son, Deron Byrne (Mandy) of Danville, Ky.; daughters, Stephanie Byrne of Lanesville, Shannon Byrne Ward (David) of Lexington, N.C., and Teresa Byrne Vaughn of New Albany, Ind.; grandchildren, Cullen Mason (Blake), Gentry Bean (Chapman), Rylee Ward, Briles Ward and Brandon Vaughn; great-grandchildren, James Brooks Bean and Teylor Vaughn; and niece, Elizabeth Turner.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023, at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon. Pastor Chapman Bean of Southland Christian Church of Lexington, Ky., and Pastor Mark Carnahan will officiate. Burial will follow in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023, and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
The pallbearers will be David, Rylee and Briles Ward, Carl Turner, Blake Mason and Brandon Vaughn. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Carter, Jim Acton, Steve Smith, Lynn and Sam Gibson and Lin (Tooker) Weathers.
The family suggests memorial gifts be made to either the American Cancer Society or to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
