Indiana University had a fantastic start to 2023 when it traveled to Nashville, Tenn., to partake in the annual Commodore Challenge at Vanderbilt University on Jan. 13 and 14.

The Hoosiers captured 10 event titles during the two-day event, setting 43 personal bests in the process. Two of those came on the meet’s second day in the men’s mile, which came with historic ramifications.

Graduate student Jake Gebhardt and sophomore Camden Marshall had two of the best runs in the event in school history with times of 3:59.18 and 3:59.30, respectively, joining the school’s elite sub-four-minute-mile club. Gebhardt’s time became the ninth best in program history, while Marshall, a Corydon Central graduate and former state champion, moved into 10th place all-time.

Marshall also took part in the 800-meter run, finishing seventh with a time of 1:54.41.
