Peter J. Schickel

Peter J. Schickel, 99, Lanesville, Ind., died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022, at his home in Lanesville.

He was born June 18, 1923, in Lanesville, to Herman and Clara Spath Schickel.

Pete was a farmer by profession, but he was so much more. He and his wife, Joan, owned and operated Schickel Egg Farm for 42 years. They were married 74 years before her death in December of 2020.

Pete was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a founding member of the Harrison County Community Foundation Board of Directors and Harrison County Hospital Foundation. He was treasurer of Lanesville School Corp., director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association, 30-year county councilman for Harrison County, founding member of Lanesville Heritage Weekend Committee and member of Indiana Farm Bureau, Franklin Township Athletic Club and Lanesville Lions Club. In 2017, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash to Pete. Also, Pete was an avid Lanesville Eagle and IU sports fan.

Pete is preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Joan Uhl Schickel; brother, Paul Schickel; and three sisters, Catherine Schickel, Mary Kirchgessner and Theresa Hobbins; and son-in-law, Tim Hardy.

He is survived by his brother, Herman Schickel Jr. of Louisville, Ky.; children, Marilyn Lines (John) of Loveland, Colo., Robert Schickel (Teresa) of Lanesville, Janet Hardy of Louisville, Carol Hoehn (Joe) of Corydon, Ind., and Donna Zutt (Michael) of Louisville; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Monday, Dec. 12, 2022, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lanesville.

Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 11, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon and Monday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. until the time of funeral.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lanesville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Croix Hospice Support Foundation, 7755 3rd St. N, Suite 200, Oakdale, MN 55128 (all hospice donations will be used for local care); Lanesville Community Schools c/o Harrison County Community Foundation; Lanesville Youth League c/o Harrison County Community Foundation; or St. Mary’s Catholic Church c/o Harrison County Community Foundation, P.O.
