Ronald E. Hornickel, 94, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, at Westminster Village in Indianapolis, Ind.

He was born Nov. 18, 1928, in Laconia, Ind., the son of Walter and Carrie Evans Hornickel.

He began working in the Harrison County Recorder’s office as a young man. His father had been the recorder and passed away during his term. Ron’s mother finished the term as recorder, and he worked under her in the office. He then began working at Steepletons Billiards in Louisville, Ky., as the shipping clerk, was promoted to manager, then to president and finally to part owner. Ron purchased the Indiana franchise Steepletons of Indiana in Indianapolis and was there until his retirement. He was an Indiana University basketball fan, and his claim to fame was that he and Mickey Mouse were created and born on the very same day. He attended Grace Assembly of God Church in Whiteland, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice Mae Winders Hornickel; and three brothers, William, Paul and Lorrel (Snaz) Hornickel.

He is survived by a son, Russ (Rusty) Hornickel (Melodie) of Indianapolis; daughters, Ronda Carter (Greg) of Laconia and Robin Hornickel of New Whiteland, Ind.; grandchildren, Kelly Carter of Laconia, Dane Carter (Wendy) of Georgetown, Ind., Megan Helvie (Eric) of New York, N.Y., and Rachel Sexton of Greenwood, Ind.; and great-grandchildren, Cade, Maecy, Molly and Marley Carter, Elliott and Reece Helvie, Nolan Sexton and Dylan Ceballos.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, 2022, at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon, Ind. The Rev. Greg Carter will be the officiant. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022, and on Monday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Lynn and Bary Hornickel, Dane and Cade Carter Elliott and Reece Helvie.
