A chilly Saturday morning to begin the month of October wasn’t enough to deter the South Central cross-country team from taking part in the annual Southern Athletic Conference meet at Borden.
Despite being in the first year of the post-Maddox Baker era, the Rebels’ boys showed that they were now one of the top teams in the conference, riding a trio of top-10 finishes to claim their first SAC title since 2005 with a combined score of 37.
Sophomore Cole Thomas and junior Lane LaPlant led the way for the Rebels as their representatives to the All-SAC team, finishing fourth and seventh with times of 18:03 and 18:20, respectively. Jarrett Ferree finished right behind LaPlant in eighth place with a time of 18:41, while senior Jack Schmelz rounded out the top 10 with a time of 18:48, both earning ribbons in the process.
Sophomore Colin Jones finished 13th with a time of 19:08, while senior Kole Stewart rounded out the Rebels’ conference showing by finishing 19th in 20:49.
For his Rebels’ success at the meet, head coach Robert Murawski was named SAC Coach of the Year.
On the girls’ side, senior Hannah Cory rounded out the top 10 in the 13-runner girls’ race by finishing with a time of 26:26. Junior Kameron Jones finished 12th with a time of 30:28.
Between both races, Lanesville had only one representative, freshman Jayden Schickel, who finished 22nd in the boys’ race with a time of 21:46.
