An unusual mid-September heat beat down behind Silver Creek Primary School as a number of teams gathered for the annual Silver Creek Dragon Invitational last Tuesday.
The top of the team standings was dominated by representatives from the Mid-Southern Conference as Austin captured the boys’ title with a team score of 36 and the girls’ team was edged by Charlestown, 58-59, led in part by Jessica McCoy capturing the girls’ individual title. The host Dragons finished second in the boys’ race with a score of 58, while Christian Academy of Indiana’s Alexander Pinckney took home the boys’ individual crown.

Among the 11 schools to field full teams for the boys’ race, South Central was among the better teams as it rounded out the top five with a combined score of 154. The Rebels were led by Cole Thomas and Lane LaPlant, who finished 27th and 29th with times of 19:31.62 and 19:38.26, respectively. Jarrett Ferree followed by finishing 35th in 19:59.36, along with Colin Jones (43rd, 20:18.87), Jack Schmelz (47th, 20:46.80) and Kole Stewart (62nd, 22:20.51).

Crawford County finished last among the 11 teams with a combined score of 240, led by medalist Klayton Grizzel, who finished 13th with a time of 18:23.64. Tanner Conrad finished 58th in 21:50.57, along with Riley Highbaugh (59th, 21:51.82), Aiden Sommerman (80th, 26:49.43) and Levi Richardson (84th, 28:28.85).

Lanesville had a lone representative, freshman Jayden Schickel, who finished 66th in 22:42.29. In the girls’ race, Lanesville freshman Kynlee Mader had the best finish among area runners as she finished 16th with a time of 22:53.03.

Like their counterparts in the boys’ race, Crawford County finished last among the eight schools to field full teams with a score of 221. Emma Cunningham paced the Lady Pack with a 44th-place finish in 27:37.29, followed by Bailey Bockting 52nd in 28:41.91. Kaya Cunningham was next for the Lady Pack (61st, 31:13.99) followed by Mackenzie Menke (64th, 33:30.05), Zoie Eason (65th, 33:37.40), Lacy Rizzo (67th, 35:28.75) and Sylvia Wright (68th, 36:07.46).

South Central had two runners in the girls’ race, including a top-50 finisher, Hannah Cory, who finished 41st in 26:53.11. Kameron Jones placed 63rd in 32:32.70.
