Merk project to focus on Alice Dean, thanks to grant
This is very good news for Mauckport, Glidas, Central and Heth Township memories.
In November, I will be partnering with the Indiana University Foundation Underwater Science Division Professor and Underwater Archaeologist Charlie Beeker to apply for a preservation and planning grant from the American Battle Field Protection Program.
The incredible mission of this grant is to conduct World Class Underwater Phase One Archaeological Research.
I have created the non-profit The Steamboat Alice Dean LLC.
This non-profit will be responsible for collecting any and all historic tales of the Steamboat Alice Dean for the grant. This will include video recording individuals and people with Alice Dean memorabilia.
This process will assist you with authentication of your Alice Dean artifacts, the collection and preservation of the Steamboat Alice Dean. This expurgated Navy sanitary (hospital) ship information is of vital importance to the grant.
All Alice Dean artifacts belong to you, and the U.S. Navy and Indiana will not confiscate them.
It has taken 10 years for me to get I.U. on board and, because I am 70 and in failing health, this will be your last chance to include the Civil War local history on both sides of the river concerning the Steamboat Alice Dean artifacts and Morgan’s Raid.
I will be scheduling appointments for the week of Oct. 31 to Nov. 5. I welcome any and all stories, especially those that talk about personal experiences or stories of how you got your Steamboat Alice Dean artifacts.
Please take advantage of this opportunity to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to contribute to our National Civil War History.
To get more information and to schedule your time slot, email me, Clarence Merk, at the email address assigned to this project. Please include name, contact information and a brief description of what you have to share.
Thank you for your support, and I hope I get each and every last story of the Steamboat Alice Dean.
