The Harrison County Public Library will begin offering English as a Second Language/Ingles como segundo idioma classes in September.

This ESL program is intended for adult learners wanting to improve their English language skills in order to help them work and fully participate in the life of their communities. The free program will be facilitated by experienced volunteer teacher Elizabeth Redding.

Classes will meet every other Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. starting Sept. 8 and every other Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon starting Sept. 13 at the main library in Corydon.

The library financial literacy series will continue from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, at the Corydon library with a free Build Your Credit session – Improving your credit score can be possible. Join Jeremy Haydon, community manager with Chase Bank, to discuss strategies to build your credit and reach your financial goals.

HCPL staff member Nikki Esarey will lead a painting series again in September and October with sessions at each branch location. Owl Painting — Thursday, Sept. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lanesville; Saturday, Oct. 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Elizabeth; Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Corydon; and Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Palmyra. Esarey will guide participants step by step with everything needed provided. Space is limited. Cost is $5 per person and is due at registration.

Other September programs intended for persons 18 and older include:

•Stitches in Time/Sit & Stitch — Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Corydon, Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Palmyra and Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lanesville. Bring a current project or start something new; work at your own pace and enjoy the company of others.

•Scrapbooking Memories — Thursday, Sept. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lanesville. Bring your scrapbooking project to work on and socialize with others.

•Memories & Memoirs Book Club — Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Corydon; for those who love historical and biographical books. The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month. The September book is “Home Again: Essays and Memoirs from Indiana” edited by Tom Watson.

•Books & Bagels — Friday, Sept. 9, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Corydon. Choose any book from the HCPL collection to read, then enjoy a bagel and be prepared to share an overview and your thoughts on the book you selected. This group meets the second Friday of each month.

•Manga & Anime Club — Saturday, Sept. 10, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Corydon; for those who love reading manga and watching anime. The club meets the second Saturday. The manga for September is “Black Bullet” by Shiden Kanzaki.

•Card Class — Monday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lanesville and Thursday, Sept. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Palmyra. Join this free class to create handmade cards to take home; all materials are included.

•Cook Book Club — Thursday, Sept. 15, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Corydon. Participants will bring a themed dish (main or side) to share along with the recipe used to create it and will sample each other’s dishes and collect copies of each recipe. This club meets the third Thursday of each month. The theme for September is Appetizers/Dips. Registration is required for this free club.

•Anything Goes Craft Day — Saturday, Sept. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lanesville. Bring a craft project to work on and socialize with others.

•Just Desserts — Monday, Sept. 19, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Corydon. Participants will bring a themed dessert to share along with the recipe used to create it and will sample each other’s desserts and collect copies of each recipe. This group meets the third Monday of each month. The theme for September is Pudding. Registration is required for this free gathering.

•Mystery Book Club — Monday, Sept. 19, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Lanesville. This club meets the third Monday of each month. The September book is “The Couple Next Door” by Shari Lapena.

•Paper Quilling — Monday, Sept. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lanesville. Learn the art of paper quilling (rolling, shaping and gluing strips of paper to create decorative designs). Registration is required for this free session.

•Clever Crafts — Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Corydon. All materials will be provided for this free session, including instructions and help if needed. Craft for September is fall scents with Mason jars.

•Cooking with Class — Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lanesville. Develop culinary skills and experiment with new ingredients while preparing dishes and learning about various ways to create meals. The focus of this free class for September will be tailgating.

•The Write Stuff — Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Corydon. Bring your thoughts, ideas and imagination. This free offering meets the last Tuesday of each month.

•Junk Journaling — Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lanesville. Create your own junk journal from recycled and found materials; design your pages to be used for writing, drawing, recording memories or whatever you would like.
