William Joseph Biel, the 2006 salutatorian of South Central Junior-Senior High School, recently earned a doctorate degree from the University of Connecticut, where he has been teaching while completing his dissertation for the degree.

Biel graduated with honors from Indiana University Southeast in 2010 and then earned a master’s degree in English at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

In 2013, Biel entered an international program, attending the University of Reykjavik in Iceland, followed by a second year at the University of Osio in Norway, earning a combined Master of Arts in Viking and Medieval Norse studies in 2015.

After that, he returned to the United States, where he was offered an Honors Fellowship to the University of Connecticut.

Biel and his wife, Mollie Kervick, who also earned a doctorate in English, have both been offered a Fellowship position by the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. They will teach English courses to Army command cadets.

Biel is the son of Charlie J. Biel of Dogwood, in southern Harrison County, and Jill McGrain Biel, who passed away in 2002. The elder Biel stewards the family forest and wildlife conservation project in Harrison and Washington counties.
