North Harrison senior Molly Coomer signed her National Letter of Intent to play volleyball with Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on March 7.
Coomer, the daughter of Calvin and Terra Coomer, served as the starting libero for the Lady Cats, who finished 7-19 in the 2021 season. The Fredericksburg resident led the Lady Cats with 371 receptions, 220 digs and 30 service aces.
A number of schools were in the mix for Coomer’s services, including several she had reached out to. She ultimately decided on St. Mary-of-the-Woods due to a number of factors, notably her interactions with the Pomeroys’ coaching staff during her official visit in early August.
“There were many factors in my decision to attend SMWC. The main reason was the Catholic atmosphere, which I loved since I am Catholic myself. The small community was also a big factor of my decision. I loved the nursing program as well; they were very helpful and flexible,” Coomer said. “The overall selling point for me was the amazing coaching staff, (which) actually changed mid recruiting for me. I love the new coaches, Ashlee and Ian Harris. They are married and run the men and women’s programs. I absolutely loved them and the whole program they are building. I wanted to be part of a team like this.”
The Pomeroys finished the 2021 season at 15-14, which culminated with winning the USCAA Small College Division I National Championship over Bluefield State. They also competed in their first season as a member of the NAIA’s River States Conference, finishing 6-11 in conference play.
