After one week of high school girls’ basketball, the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association has released its list of candidates for IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week Honors.

South Bend Washington’s Mila Reynolds, Union City’s Emily Livingston and Eastern’s (Pekin) Kyia McKinley won the award for their respective districts, but there was local representation in District 3 in the form of Corydon Central junior guard Ava Weber and Lanesville junior forward Linzie Wernert.

Weber, a 5-foot-10 point guard, had a strong start to the season in her two games against New Washington and Mid-Southern Conference-rival Brownstown Central. In the Lady Panthers’ season opener against the Lady Mustangs, Weber recorded 23 points, eight rebounds and three steals. She followed that with a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double along with four steals. For the week, she averaged 22 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game.

Wernert, a 5-foot-8 forward, helped lead the Class 1A No. 2 Lady Eagles to a tight 49-42 victory over Class 2A No. 20 Mitchell on Saturday. The junior posted an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double with four steals.

This is the 14th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program but the second season it is presented by Franciscan Health, a corporate sponsor of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s three districts. Girls’ winners will be chosen through the Monday following the Indiana High School Athletic Association girls’ state finals. Boys’ winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA boys’ state finals.

Weber and Wernert were among the District 3 nominees for Week 1, which ran Nov. 1 to 6.
