COVID-19 vaccine available for 5 to 11 year olds COVID-19 vaccine available for 5 to 11 year olds

The Harrison County Health Dept. announced last Wednesday that individual ages 5 to 11 years are now eligible to receive the Pfizer MRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

The Pfizer vaccine is the only COVID-19 vaccine that is currently authorized for individuals under age 18.

Vaccine clinics for children ages 5 to 11 are offered at the health department, located at 241 Atwood St. in Corydon, on Mondays from 2 to 6 p.m. until further notice.

The pediatric dose of Pfizer is lower than the dosage for ages 12 and older, so parents should ensure they visit a site that carries the pediatric dosage. Pediatric vaccine supplies may be limited initially as shipments arrive on a staggered basis. Individuals are encouraged to make an appointment. A parent or guardian must provide consent, and children younger than 16 must be accompanied to the vaccination appointment by an adult.

To register for an appointment, visit https://ourshot.in.gov and look for the pin designating sites with pediatric vaccine or call the Harrison County Health Dept. at 812-738-3231, options 1 or 2.

To date, 18,441 Harrison County residents (approximately 53% of the population age 12 and older) are now fully vaccinated. That’s an increase of 55 residents since the previous week. Statewide, another 9,248 residents are fully vaccinated, bringing the total to 3,383,671.

Since Indiana saw its first COVID case in March of 2020, there have been 1,037,109 positive cases, up 13,129 from last week. An additional 207,275 tests were conducted in the past week, bringing that total to 14,769,932.

In Harrison County, 6,631 positive cases of the coronavirus have been documented, an increase of 51 since the previous week. The local health department reports a total of 97 deaths, while a total of 16,414 Hoosiers are documented to have died from the virus.

Harrison County was designated in the orange category, the next to highest level of metrics for the virus, last Wednesday, along with 39 other counties. One county was designated blue (the lowest of the four), 49 were yellow and two were red. The Indiana State Dept. of Health updates the metric ratings each Wednesday at noon.
