Mrs. Dorothy O’Bryan, age 94, former resident of Franklin, Ky., passed away on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, at her residence with her son in Nashville, Tenn.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Gilbert Funeral Home & Crematory in Franklin, Ky. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary of the Woods in Franklin, Ky., with burial following at the Catholic cemetery in Franklin, Ky.
Mrs. O’Bryan was born on March 30, 1927, in Franklin, Ky., to the late Mary Susan and the late John Thornton.
She is also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Merile O’Bryan.
She is survived by brothers David Thornton of Corydon, Ind., and Jimmy Thornton of Franklin, Ky. She previously survived over 10 brothers and sisters from two families.
She is survived by three sons, Merile F. O’Bryan (Carol) and Roy A O’Bryan (Barbara deceased), both of Franklin, Ky., and Leo A. O’Bryan of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Fern M. O’Bryan Mercer of Woodburn, Ky.; and five grandchildren, Bonnie Spears, Ben O’Bryan, Susan Jennett, Bradley (deceased) and Zachary Threlkel. She is related to the Minks and Thorntons in the Franklin, Portland Cross Plains area.
Her mother moved to New Albany and Corydon, Ind., while she was under one year old. She was raised by her mother and Robert Thornton. She left school at the eighth grade to raise her other children.
She was a pioneer woman and farm worker in her early years. She plowed fields with horses and cut logs with a cross-cut saw. She milked herds of cows by hand. With all of the work and chores, she still made biscuits from scratch three times a day.
She moved with her husband and family back to Simpson County in the late 1960s, where she resided until the last 3-1/2 years. Dorothy was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She came home to Franklin again on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021.
