Out of the six teams competing in the Indiana High School Athletic Association volleyball sectional 61, Lanesville found itself in a fortunate position. Among the six teams venturing to Rock Creek Community Academy last week, the Lady Eagles captured one of the two first-round byes.
To add to their fortunes, the Lady Eagles could focus on practice and rest while awaiting the winner of the first-round matchup between two Southern Athletic Conference rivals. Those rivals were New Washington, which the Lady Eagles defeated in four sets on Sept. 23, and South Central, which was swept aside just four days later.
Once the Lady Mustangs dismissed the Lady Rebels, it was the Lady Eagles’ turn to play when semi-final action began Saturday morning. Like their regular-season confrontation, the Lady Eagles and Lady Mustangs seemed primed for a back-and-forth affair as they split the match’s first 34 points. From that point, the Lady Eagles broke away on an 8-2 surge to take the first set 25-19.
Not wanting to dig their hole deeper so early in the match, the Lady Mustangs started the second set with a solid 11-8 lead. The Lady Eagles wanted no part of repeating the sequence of their regular-season meeting with the Lady Mustangs, surging ahead with a 10-2 run made possible more on Lady Mustangs’ errors. While the Lady Mustangs were able to cut into the deficit, it wasn’t enough as the Lady Eagles took the second set 25-20.
After winning the first two sets, the Lady Eagles were in complete control, especially when they started the third set with an 11-3 surge. The Lady Mustangs stood no chance as they eventually fell to the Lady Eagles 25-13 in what became the final set.
With the three-game sweep, the Lady Eagles advanced to the sectional championship later that night, where they confronted Shawe Memorial.
