By the time people diverged from South Central Junior-Senior High School on Saturday, a day full of volleyball had concluded. For one of the six schools involved, Tell City, its players’ heads were held a little higher than the rest as they finished the day with a perfect 3-0 record to win the Rowdy Rebel Invitational.

The Lady Marksmen’s championship matchup against Charlestown was easily their most challenging contest of the tournament before eventually winning in the only decisive third set of the entire invitational (25-18, 19-25, 15-8). Prior to this meeting with the Lady Pirates, the Lady Marksmen had to confront both Corydon Central and North Harrison in pool play.

Before the Lady Marksmen could take the court, the Lady Panthers and Lady Cats kicked off the tournament against one another. In an impromptu tournament edition of the Big Cat Classic, the Lady Panthers won both sets by small margins over the Lady Cats (25-22, 25-21), setting up their next confrontation against the aforementioned Tell City.

This matchup between the Lady Panthers and Lady Marksmen was not the first time the two squads squared off during the season. In their first meeting in Tell City on Sept. 2, the Lady Panthers had no difficulty dispatching the Lady Marksmen in a sweep. Nine days later in Corydon, the Lady Panthers survived a decisive third set against the Lady Markmen en route to winning the Corydon Central Invitational.

For the Lady Marksmen, the third time was the charm as they swept the Lady Panthers in two closely fought sets (25-21, 25-23). Followed by a two-set sweep over North Harrison (25-11, 26-24), the Lady Marksmen breezed their way to the championship round as the champion of Pool A.

In Pool B, the host Lady Rebels, who fielded only eight players, had a tough start to their own tournament as they fell to Charlestown in two sets (25-6, 25-12). Matters didn’t get easier for the short-handed Lady Rebels as their next contest was against Southern Athletic Conference-rival Borden, whom they already fell to in three sets on Sept. 2. Like they did in conference play, the Lady Braves dispatched the Lady Rebels in straight sets.

After defeating the Lady Rebels, the Lady Braves ran into a buzz saw in the form of Charlestown, being swept by the Lady Pirates in two sets (25-13, 25-16) in the Pool B title match to set up the confrontation with Tell City.

With records of 1-1 in their respective pools, the Lady Panthers managed to get one more match against Borden, sweeping the Lady Braves in two sets (26-24, 25-12) to finish third in the tournament.
