A new event that organizers plan to continue into the future — the Blue River Extravaganza — will take place in Milltown Saturday and Sunday.
Eddie Wetzel, one of the organizers, said the idea started with the Milltown American Legion Post No. 332, where Wetzel is post commander, planning a chicken barbecue. The Legion will barbecue 300 chicken halves on Sunday.
“It started with our Legion and just expanded,” said Wetzel. “There’s going to be a lot going on; music, karaoke, pool tournaments, cornhole.”
Wetzel said other groups involved in planning the festivities are Cave Country Canoes, Milltown Farmers Market, Mixed Nuts Car Club and Milltown Police Dept.
Events will begin Saturday with a four-wheeler ride. Sign-ups will start at 9 a.m. with riders taking off at 10. Entry fee is $10 per driver and $5 per passenger. All proceeds will go toward the Legion’s Christmas program, providing toys and gifts for area children.
The Legion will sell breakfast sandwiches from 8 to 10. The post will also grill hamburgers and hot dogs beginning at noon.
A cornhole tournament will kick off at noon both days. Entry fee is $10 per team. There will be a cash prize awarded to the winners.
The American Legion will host a beer garden beginning at noon both days.
Cave Country Canoes is offering half-price canoe rides down the Blue River both days to Crawford and Harrison County residents. At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Cave Country, along with the police department, will host a Paddle Battle. Entry fee is $5, and teams of four are needed. This is a figure-eight speed race, and spectators are encouraged to watch. All proceeds will benefit the One Community initiative.
The Milltown Farmers Market will be set up both days with a variety of vendor booths. There is no charge for vendors. Call Wetzel at 812-572-3429 if interested in having a booth.
Tickets for a 50-50 raffle will be available both days.
The Legion will properly dispose of old flags in a retirement ceremony set for 5 p.m. Saturday.
Cooks are invited to showcase their skills in a chili cook-off on Saturday. Call Cave Country Canoes at 812-633-4806 for more information.
Karaoke will be set up Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m.
A car show, hosted by Mixed Nuts Car Club, will headline Sunday’s events. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. with an entry fee of $10. Awards will be presented at 4 p.m. for Best of Show, Post 332 pick and the Mixed Nuts choice.
The Legion’s chicken barbecue dinner — with baked beans, slaw and bread for $10 each — will be served drive-thru style.
Anyone seeking more information should call Wetzel at the above number.
“We’re hoping everyone will come out and enjoy and just have a good time,” said Wetzel.
