Hoosier Heritage Barn Week proclaimed
Gov. Eric Holcomb has proclaimed Sept. 20 to 26 as Hoosier Heritage Barn Week “to help celebrate heritage barns throughout the state and to discover additional ways that we can respect and preserve them.”
The proclamation was made at the request of the Indiana Barn Foundation that seeks to promote the preservation of barns through the learning about barn and agriculture history, assisting with the restoration and preservation of heritage barns and preserving the Hoosier landscape.
The proclamation also comes before the 2021 Barn Tour featuring eight farms and 13 historic barns of various architecture on Saturday, Sept. 25, in Allen and Dekalb counties.
The Barn Foundation recently published a barn booklet about the history and evolution of different types of barns, “Indiana’s Heritage Barns: Their History, Uses and Preservation,” made possible through a grant from Indiana Landmarks, Indiana Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional funding for the matching grant was provided by Farm Credit Mid-America.
