More leaders like Byrd, Cutrera needed

The community recently lost two gentlemen who made significant impacts in Harrison County. The first one I did not know personally, and the second person I knew well.

Edsel Byrd made a real difference in this community by starting the movie theatre. Because of that, people from Harrison County and surrounding counties, including Meade County, Ky., are able to benefit from some top-notch entertainment. It is great for the kids, and it means that teenagers no longer have to be on the road driving to distant theatres.

I am grateful to Edsel Byrd for having the foresight to improve his community dramatically. I am also grateful to his son, Chris, for keeping the tradition alive and not selling out to a large corporation.

The second person, Andy Cutrera, made a significant difference in the lives of hundreds of students as a teacher/coach at New Middletown Elementary School for over 20 years.

Andy and I both taught at New Middletown Elementary, and we became good friends. We ate lunch together in the summer and enjoyed talking about our past experiences in the classroom.

The students loved their beloved teacher, Mr. C., and I know they and their community are grateful for the impact he had on them.

We need more people in our community/world doing the same, making it a better place for all.
