Fishing tournament named for Coffman Fishing tournament named for Coffman

The New Amsterdam Boat Club will host its inaugural Randy Coffman Big Cat Classic Tournament on Saturday, July 10, at the Horseshoe Bend Campground and Boat Ramp in Leavenworth.

Sign-ups will take place from 6 to 7 a.m., and weigh-ins will begin at 2 p.m.

A payout of $500 is guaranteed for first place.

Free refreshments and hot dogs by campground owner Missi Bush-Sawtelle will be available during the weigh-in.

The fundraiser will continue after the weigh-in with Meat Slingers BBQ set up in the park in Old Leavenworth, serving smoked brisket, pulled pork, chicken leg quarters, smoked sausage, fresh boudin from Louisiana and more.

All proceeds from the tournament and food sales will benefit the Coffman Family Forestry Scholarship in memory of Randy Coffman, a Corydon native. The fund was started by his family to remember Coffman as a good steward of the forestry and timber industry and to remember him as an avid fisherman and founding member of the boat club.

Coffman graduated from Corydon Central High School in 1970 and was drafted into the Army in November 1971. After leaving the military in 1974, he returned home to join his father and brothers in the logging and lumber and timber industry and remained in the business as co-owner of Coffman Woodland Services Inc. until he retired. He died in April at the age of 68.
