Andrew (Andy) Emanuel Cutrera, 74, of Lanesville, Ind., passed away Friday, June 25, 2021, surrounded by family at home. He had battled cancer since March 2018.

He was born in Chicago, Ill., on Sept. 4, 1946.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard  Cutrera and Dorothy Sprafka Cutrera, and his younger brother, Charles.

He is survived by his wife, Delores Ostrander Cutrera; daughter, Jessica Papadoupolos (George), and son, Charles (Melissa); five grandchildren; and brother, John.

He grew up in River Forest, Ill., and graduated from Oak Park High School. He graduated from Indiana University with a master’s degree in education.

He started his teaching career at LaGrange reformatory and then taught fifth and sixth grades 28 years at New Middletown Elementary School. He had a heart for the struggling student. The students affectionately called him Mr. C. He also coached fifth- and sixth-grade girls’ and boys’ basketball. His philosophy was that every child should play, winning came second.

Andy loved attending his children’s extracurricular events. He especially enjoyed walks and bookstore trips with Jessica and Saturday morning outings and violin lessons with Charles. He was an avid gardener with bumper crops of various fruits and vegetables. Even in his final months of battling cancer, he managed to plant a great potato crop.

In retirement, Andy volunteered for many years at Clark Memorial Hospital.

Andy was blessed to have wonderful caregivers in his final month: Katie, Tina and Faith. Hosparus also provided excellent care in the final months.

Andy donated his body to Indiana University School of Medicine.

Memorial contributions can be made to his church, Eastern Heights Baptist Church, or to Hosparus of Southern Indiana.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on July 24 at Edwardsville United Methodist Church.
