Ida Catherine (Cathy) Hurst Buschemeyer, 80, of Corydon, Ind., died peacefully Wednesday, June 2, 2021, after an extended battle with dementia.

Born April 17, 1941, to Parker and Winifred (nee Smith) Hurst, she was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 49 years, John Buschemeyer; sister, Frances Madden; brother, William (Billy) Hurst; and stepfather, Herman Miller.

She is survived by her daughters, Sarah Koetter (Brian) of Starlight, Ind., and Gretchen Swasey (Brett) of Rocky River, Ohio; five grandchildren, Mason, Emily, Molly, Maggie and Sarah; her stepsister, Ann Silverman; and many nieces and nephews.

Cathy graduated in 1959 from Corydon Central High School. She attended the University of Louisville, graduating in 1963 as a member of the Chi Omega fraternity. In 1971, she earned her master’s degree from Indiana University and went on to teach elementary school and Head Start. She later worked at the Red Barn Antique Mall, where she shared her love of antiques with customers, co-workers and friends.

A lifelong resident of Corydon, Cathy’s roots date back to Revolutionary War veteran Lt. John Hurst who, in 1803, applied for a land grant in Jackson Township and established the Hurst family in Harrison County. She loved her town and volunteered her time to make Corydon more vibrant and beautiful. She was a board member of Main Street Corydon, president of the Greater Corydon Community Association, the chair of Light Up Corydon and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Her grandchildren will remember her gourmet cooking, especially the famous Christmas crab crepes, pinwheel chocolate treats and unique Easter egg hunts that included traditional and special “rotten” eggs enclosed with lighthearted chores, highlighting her sense of humor. Throughout her illness, Cathy was lovingly cared for by her family, Diane Becht and the caregivers of Harrison Springs and Kindred Hospice.

Visitation will be Saturday, June 5, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 312 E. High St. in Corydon, with funeral Mass at 1:30 p.m. Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Harrison County Community Foundation — Corydon Central High School Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund — hccfindiana.org/esdonate, P.O. Box 279, Corydon, IN 47112-0279 or St. Joseph Catholic Church, 312 E. High St., Corydon, IN 47112.
