Dollar General recently completed updates of its Palmyra and Marengo stores, remodeling both and changing them to the DG Market format.

The English Dollar General was changed to the DG Market format last fall.

DG Markets feature fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared salads and deli items and an expanded refrigerator/freezer section with a variety of dairy, frozen vegetables, meats, ice cream and more.

“The fresh produce is a huge bonus for our community,” said Tracy Cast, manager of the Marengo store. “Customers have so many more options without having to travel.”

Cast said the store has a large base of regular customers, several of whom live in the apartments across the street or in the senior housing units nearby.

The expanded store with a larger grocery section — freezer/refrigerator space tripled — allows Dollar General to better serve customers.

“There’s a lot more variety to choose from,” said Cast “It’s awesome.”

Michelle Morris is assistant keyholder at the English location. She said the changes there have been well-received.

“A lot of customers really like it,” said Morris. “The produce is excellent; customers really like our produce.”

The three stores all feature a new layout and expanded home and kitchen sections.

“There’s more variety than before,” said Cast.

The DG Markets also now have a self-checkout option.

The Palmyra and English locations are open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The Marengo store has expanded summer hours, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

“Dollar General’s mission is serving others,” said Cast. “That’s definitely what we try to do, provide what community members need without them having to travel so far.”
