Area tennis teams see season end
New Albany blanked Corydon Central, 5-0, in the championship match of the New Albany girls’ tennis sectional Thursday.
In No. 1 singles play, Claire Meyer defeated Mc-
Kenzie Hess 6-0, 6-1. Natalie Saydera won by default at No. 2, and Corinne Miller defeated Lesly Martinez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.
In doubles action, Layne Burke and Lily Meyer turned back Kimberly Wolfe and Bre Edwards 6-0, 6-0, while Maci Crone and Elise Conrad defeated Lydia Neill and Shalynn Mattingly 6-0, 6-0.
Corydon Central advanced to the final with a 3-2 win over defending champion Christian Academy of Indiana (2019) last Wednesday.
The Lady Panthers swept doubles and won at No. 3 singles.
Martinez defeated Emily Long 6-1, 6-1, while in doubles play Wolfe and Edwards bested Adeline Baldwin and Madeline Paul 6-2, 6-4 and Neill and Mattingly defeated Lacey Kendall and Rebekah Wright 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Lanesville’s season ended with a 4-1 semi-final loss to New Albany.
Morgan Bell scored for Lanesville at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 6-4, retired.
New Albany swept the other four matches with Meyer defeating Grace Campbell 6-0, 6-0, Saydera defeating Rachel Leffler 6-0, 6-1, Burke and Meyer defeating Linzie Wernert and Emma Campbell 6-1, 6-2 and Crone and Conrad defeating McKenna Smith and Kallin Scarberry 6-0, 6-2.
Eastern defeated North Harrison, 5-0, in the semi-finals of the Floyd Central Sectional on Thursday.
On the singles courts, Kaleigh Earhart defeated Isabella Nordhoff 6-0, 6-2, Madeline Lewellen defeated Halle Pearson 6-2, 6-4 and Dylan Whitfield defeated Kelsey Delaney 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles, Emily Smith and Mykenzee Graham turned back Emily Bowen and Olivia Wise 6-0, 6-1, while Brooke Sease and Isabel Cox defeated Kendyl Lasley and Hope Whittaker 6-1, 6-3.
