Bertha Zurschmiede Bertha Zurschmiede

Bertha Zurschmiede, 102, Georgetown, Ind., survivor of two pandemics, passed away peacefully at her home at the Villas of Guerin Woods.

Daughter of the late Ora Harriet and Robert Evaline of Palmyra, Ind., she was born in Depauw, Ind., on Aug. 30, 1918.

Near her home, Bertha attended Brush College Grade School, Depauw High School for two years and completed her GED at age 59 to attend Ivy Tech for another six months.

Throughout her lifetime in addition to raising four children, which she describes as her greatest achievement, she worked at Goodyear Engineering (Powder Plant) in Charlestown, Ind., and was a seamstress at Kentucky Loom in Louisville, Ky., and H.A. Seinschiemer’s Co. in New Albany, Ind. She also worked part time at the Fair Store and White House department stores in New Albany, Bond’s Alterations in Jeffersonville, Ind., and was head of the Toy Department at Grant’s 10 Cent Store in New Albany. She was a member of St. Marks United Church of Christ in New Albany, Order of the Eastern Star and Morgan Township and Fredericksburg Homemakers clubs and was a long-time member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. For many years while in her Florida home, Bertha passionately collected, preserved and created crafts with numerous types of seashells, which to this day adorn many homes. She became an avid genealogist later and compiled several family history books, which are a worthy contribution to the various families.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert U. Zurschmiede and Leroy Thomas Johnson; daughter, Shirley Rae Perry; son-in-law, Gary Alan Perry; daughter-in-law, Anita Rainbolt Zurschmiede; grandson, Thomas Eric Perry; sisters, Lucille McCutcheon (Bud), Mary Helen Evaline, Lottie Agnes Ayres and Margaret Ann Hoffman (Merrill); and brothers, Clyde Evaline (Clara), Chester Evaline (Blanche), Marvin Evaline (Martha), Wilbur Evaline (Hazel) and Bruce Evaline (Dorothy).

Bertha is survived by her children, William Robert Zurschmiede (Evelyn) of New Albany and San Antonio, Fla., Marvin Edward Zurschmiede (Elizabeth) of El Paso, Texas, and Lorna Sue Harold (Richard) of Silver Spring, Md.; five grandchildren, Kevin Zurschmiede (Beverly), Kelly Brown (Brian) of New Albany, Matthew Zurschmiede (Louise) of Windsor, Calif., Kristine Perry (Scott) of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Mark Zurschmiede (Jeanette) of El Paso, Texas; nine great-grandchildren, Joshua Perry, Dylan Perry, Ashley Brown, Allison Brown, Julia Brown, Kimberly Perry, Brooklyn Sommer (Carl), Treasure Anne Perry and Cameryn Zurschmiede; and two great-great-grandchildren, Liliana Dodd and Magnolia Sommer.
