Appearances matter, especially when it comes to tax money
There is an episode in Netflix’s “The Crown” in which an unlikable character lectures Queen Elizabeth II about allowing small procedural misfires to occur. He warns they can grow exponentially.
You must keep up appearances in order to maintain integrity, even on the smallest detail.
Queens, kings, elected officials or anyone given power over the people and their tax money must strive, even over-compensate, to appear above repute. That’s tough when, even with the best of intentions, the easy thing is quicker and gets a job done. It may not break a law, but it looks bad.
