Sarah D. Collins Sarah D. Collins

Sarah Dyer Collins passed away at Westminster Presbyterian Nursing Home in Louisville, Ky., on Friday, Feb. 19, 2021, at the age of 90.

Sarah was born Dec. 16, 1930, in Crawford County, Ind., to the late Franklin R. and Hazel Dyer Collins.

She loved growing up on the family farm and participating in 4-H, church activities and living through the Great Flood of the Ohio River in 1937. She shared many interesting stories of those years with us younger cousins. Sarah was a proud graduate of Leavenworth High School, maintaining close contacts with her graduating class of 1949 throughout her life.

She graduated from Spencerian Business College in Louisville and had a successful career at South Central Bell Telephone Co., retiring as executive secretary to the president of the company.

Sarah had two beloved sisters, Delia Alice (Dee Dee) Collins and Mary Ruth Collins Bunch (Harry), who preceded her in death. She felt that the God-given sisterhood was a close family bond enriching their lives to share and love and appreciate others. They also had many cousins and friends.

Local cousins who survive are Esther Collins Chanley and Bert Collins (Kathy) of Leavenworth, Ind., and their children and grandchildren, and Cheryl Karen Collins of Louisville, Ky. Northern Indiana cousins are Irma Franklin, Phyllis Malicoat and Mary Jo Hall, all of Spencer, Ind. As our family would visit over the years, one of Sarah’s smiling sayings was how much she loved all her cousins.

Sarah was a long-time member of Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church, a former member of Leavenworth, Ind., Presbyterian Church and a member of the former Highlands Chapter AARP. She enjoyed traveling to 48 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, England, the British Isles and Scandinavia. Many lasting friendships were made in these travels. Sarah created amazing albums of every trip they took and loved to share these with family and friends.

Her family extends grateful thanks to all the staff at Westminster Presbyterian Homes of Louisville for their love, support and care. Also, we appreciate so much the love, kindness and loyal visitation by their many friends and pastors from the Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church over these declining years.

Cremation was chosen by Sarah, and, due to COVID-19 restrictions, no funeral will be held at this time. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Leavenworth.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 15, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Crawford Consolidated United Methodist Church in Leavenworth.

Even though for the last 50 years the Collins Family called Louisville “Home,” their hearts were always “Home” when returning to Leavenworth.
