A vehicle crash Friday afternoon on S.R. 11 resulted in the death of a Elizabeth man.

According to a report by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept., Robert Mercer, 40, was traveling south when his black 2018 Ford Escape crossed the center line then traveled in the northbound lane of traffic before running off the highway and striking a tree and overturning in a creek near Greenbrier Road.

The crash occurred at about 2:15 p.m.

Officer S. Davis’ report said evidence at the scene indicates that Mercer never applied the brakes or swerved before the impact. There were no witnesses, he added.

Mercer was wearing his seat belt and was trapped in the vehicle, according to the report, and the vehicle’s air bag deployed.

Harrison County Coroner Jeremy McKim ordered an autopsy to be performed to determine if Mercer was impaired or suffered a medical emergency before the crash.
