Three days after Silver Creek dealt Class 4A Crown Point its first regular-season loss in 56 games, Corydon Central took a shot at the top-ranked Lady Dragons and fell short, 59-45.

Corydon Central (9-6) led 21-14 at the end of the first quarter, but Silver Creek (14-2) rallied to hold a 31-28 lead at halftime.

The Lady Panthers fought back to lead 34-33 midway through the third before the Dragons’ defense helped generate offense in allowing the visitors to push the tempo. After the Lady Panthers led by one, Silver Creek went on a 15-0 run to make it 48-34 heading to the final eight minutes.

Corydon Central senior Grace Erwin dropped in four triples, including three in the opening quarter, en route to team-high honors with 14 points. Kayla Willoughby added 10 points on 6-of-6 shooting at the foul stripe.

“The first half we were able to break the pressure and kick out to the open person for shots. That did help create some things at the basket as well,” said Corydon Central coach Josh Conrad. “In the first half, and really most of the game, we did a very good job finding their shooters and keeping them out of the paint. The second half we got tired and had some mental mistakes. We quit attacking their defense by moving the basketball and cutting to the ball.”

“With that being said, you have to be proud of the girls’ efforts,” he said. “Silver Creek is a very good basketball team, and we showed a lot of good things. It is something that we can build on as we finish out the season and get ready for sectional.”

Alana Striverson led all scorers with 17 points, including 13 in the first half.

Last Thursday night the Lady Panthers got 16 points from sophomore Ava Weber and held Eastern to a season-low 27 points in 42-27 Mid-Southern Conference victory at home.

Corydon Central is scheduled to host Madison (6-9) on Saturday then travel to rival North Harrison (8-3) on Tuesday.
