Gary Steven Herthel, 71, Marengo, Ind., died Wednesday evening, Aug. 5, 2020, at Harrison County Hospital in Corydon, Ind.

Gary was born in New Albany, Ind., on Oct. 18, 1948, to Artie and Hazel Whitlow Herthel.

He worked for Culligan Water in Corydon for 26 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Vietnam conflict.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Lucille Reeder and Carole Byrne.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah (Debbie) Reed Herthel of Marengo; his son, Nicholas Herthel (Carrie) of Ramsey, Ind.; daughter, Nicole Herthel-Frye (Gary) of Franklin, Ind.; stepson, Steven Miller (Collen) of Shelbyville, Ky.; stepdaughter, Candice Lewis (Steve) of Seminole, Fla.; four grandchildren, Tyler Herthel, Taylor Herthel, Sabrina Glendy and Justin Sung; four step-grandchildren, Mason, Garrett and Bailey Miller and Kaylee Lewis; one step-great-granddaughter, McKenzie Daily; and two brothers, Artie Herthel Jr. and Merle Herthel (Jackie), both of Georgetown, Ind.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9. 2020, at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon. Dr. Michael Bonacum will officiate.

Visitation will be Saturday, Aug. 8, beginning at 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Corydon. Pallbearers will be Nick Herthel, Tyler Herthel, Gary Frye, Justin Sung, Steve Miller and Mason Miller.

Due to COVID-19, we are limited to under 60 people inside the funeral home at one time and masks are required as well as practicing social distancing. We are not allowed to have food to share during this time.
