Depauw man dies in house fire
Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire late Friday night along Milltown-Frenchtown Road where, once the fire was extinguished, they found a body believed to be the homeowner, Terry L. DeWeese, 61, of Depauw.
Chris Woertz, chief of the Ramsey Volunteer Fire Dept., said dispatch received multiple calls about the fire, including from a passerby and a neighbor, just before 11:30 p.m.
“The original call said it was fully engulfed in flames, so it had a big head start on us,” he said.
As part of a mutual aid agreement, the Milltown Volunteer Fire Dept. also was dispatched.
Woertz said his department arrived 13 minutes after the dispatch and members from the Milltown VFD had arrived one minute earlier.
“Upon arrival, units found heavy fire throughout the two-story home,” Woertz said. “The fire was controlled in approximately 25 minutes and, during a search of the residence, firefighters discovered the homeowner.”
The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to investigate the fire.
Woertz said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
