Help homeless Hoosier heroes
Addiction. Post-traumatic stress disorder. Adjusting to civilian life. These are just a few of the many challenges our brave veterans face after service. For thousands of men and women who served, these new battles are difficult to overcome, sometimes resulting in homelessness. The American Legion is here to help.
The American Legion provides a variety of services to those who have served, regardless of membership. Programs include homeless outreach, which provides veterans temporary housing, mentoring and job training. Often, veterans placed into housing do not have essential items, further causing burdens as they try to succeed. Homelessness is a growing issue in Indiana, where the number of Hoosier veterans without permanent housing increased by 6% in 2019.
House lawmakers are working to make a difference for hundreds of homeless veterans by teaming with the American Legion Dept. of Indiana. This legislative session, the Indiana House of Representatives is collecting hygiene products and non-perishable food items to be distributed as care packages to help homeless veterans. Our goal is to help at least 500 veterans in our state.
Please consider helping, whether through financial assistance or volunteering with a reputable veteran organization. There are several in the area that could use help to show our appreciation for our local Hoosier heroes. Working with the American Legion will help give hundreds of heroes another chance while also providing support to overcome difficult challenges.
