NH board approves raises for administrators

The North Harrison Community School Corp. Board of Trustees approved a raise for administrators of $1,000 for this year and $1,400 next year at its December meeting Thursday night. The increase is equal to raises allocated for teachers at the corporation in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 teacher contract.

During the public comments portion of the meeting, Ron Zink, a sixth-grade teacher at North Harrison Middle School and president of the North Harrison Classroom Teachers Association, told the board the raises are not the same for administrators and teachers because the contract also places much of the burden of insurance rate increases onto teachers.

“My $1,000 is not really $1,000; it’s about $500,” he said. “I would be remiss if I didn’t say that.”

Zink said the perception of equality between the raises has been a “sticking point” for many teachers at the corporation, so he felt compelled to bring it to light at the meeting.

“Eighty percent of our teachers take insurance (through the corporation), so it’s a large impact,” he said.

The raise for administrators passed unanimously.

The board approved the following resignations/retirements during the personnel portion of the meeting: Chuck Walker, high school assistant football coach; Debbie Uhl, Morgan Elementary secretary; and Jim Aich, high school instrumental music assistant.

The following appointments were also approved: Lorna Wenning, Morgan Elementary School Student Council sponsor; Billy Edelen and Elijah Lillis, volunteer boys’ basketball coaches; Matthew Miller, volunteer wrestling coach; Tashana Campbell, high school dance coach; Amber Jacobi, Morgan Elementary secretary; and Jamie Fried, middle school instructional assistant.
