Light Up events set for communities

Parks’ Merry Country Christmas to return

The communities of Lanesville, Milltown and Leavenworth will have Light Up events on Saturday, and the annual Merry Country Christmas will begin tomorrow (Thursday).

Lanesville’s eighth annual Light Up event will begin with vendors offering their wares at 3 p.m. in the First Savings Bank parking lot. At 5:45, Santa and Mrs. Claus are scheduled to ride into town and will visit with children at the town hall after the lights are turned on at 6.

For more information, call Betsy Blocker, Lanesville’s clerk-treasurer, at 812-952-2057.

Milltown’s event will include the giving away of six bicycles to children in different age categories. Parents can sign up their children for the give-away at the town hall. Kids also can enter a drawing for the honor of being the one to flip on the switch that will light the town tree.

Crawford County CASA will be at the town hall from 5 to 8 p.m. with coats and accessories for anyone in need.

Santa is set to arrive at 6 p.m. to hear wishes from boys and girls.

Hot chocolate, doughnuts and cookies will be available for all.

Also, there will be a decorating contest for the town’s homeowners.

For more information, call the town hall at 812-633-4848.

Leavenworth’s third annual Light Up event will include many activities, mostly geared toward children, said Abby Taylor, chairwoman of the organizing committee.

Among them will be a petting zoo, ornament craft, holiday movies and face painting beginning at 10 a.m.

Adults are invited to enter a chili cook-off. Entries are due between 11 and 11:30 a.m. in the senior building. Cost to enter is $10, and the winner gets half the pot. Following judging, chili, peanut butter sandwiches and drinks will be available for $5.

Free family photos will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. at the gazebo (weather permitting) in front of the former Leavenworth Inn along S.R. 62.

Local artists and vendors will sell their wares at a gift show at the senior building, and there will be carolers throughout town during the day, thanks to local churches. Also, Santa will stroll the area; he will visit with children from 3 to 5 p.m.

From 2 to 6 p.m., Crawford County 4-H will host board games and STEM activities.

Breeden Memorial Library will host an open house with free desserts and drinks. At 6:20, librarian Tina Brison will read “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” and, at 6:30 p.m., Leavenworth will light up for the Christmas season.

Winners in the home-decorating contest will be announced at 6:45 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top three.

Crawford County CASA will be on hand providing coats and accessories for anyone who is in need.

Details about contests and events may be found on the Facebook page Light Up Leavenworth, by emailing [email protected] or calling 1-317-762-0499. There will also be an information booth set up the day of the event.

Merry Country Christmas

The Harrison County Parks Dept. will offer hayrides as part of its Merry Country Christmas. The rides will take place on Dec. 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13 and 14 starting from the Ethel Wright Interpretive Center at 126 E. Walnut St. in Corydon. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for those ages 2 to 13 (free for those younger than 2). Super Pass holders can save $2 off one adult ticket.

Larry Shickles, superintendent of the parks department, said the ride will last about 45 to 50 minutes, traveling from the Wright center to Hayswood Nature Reserve and back.

“We’ve almost tripled the number of decorations,” he said. “I encourage people to buy their tickets early as there are only a limited number available.”

While waiting to depart, guests can make s’mores in fire pits, catch a performance by musician Blaise Streets and visit the Merry Country Christmas Store inside the Wright center. The store, which is where one can purchase hayride tickets as well as Christmas decorations and gifts, will be open daily for shoppers through Dec. 15. Super Pass holders can receive 10% off any purchase.

Located in the basement of the Wright center is Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen.

The Harrison County Discovery Center, which is operated by the parks department, will host Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. Super Pass holders are invited an hour earlier. Then, on Saturday, Dec. 21, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available to everyone from 1 to 5 p.m.

After visiting with Ol’ Saint Nick, children are welcome to create a Christmas craft (the Super Pass allows the holder’s first child to participate free). For details, call 812-734-0030.
