Former HC Clerk Mathes dies at 80

Barbara J. Mathes, who was a staple at the Harrison County Court House for about 40 years, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019, at Kindred Hospital in Louisville. She was 80.

“She was always at work on time and always around if you needed something,” said Steve Haggard, who served as chairman of the Harrison County Central Democrat Committee during most of the time that Mathes worked in county government.

Mathes served many years as deputy under her husband, Jesse Mathes, who has served terms as county recorder, auditor and clerk. She later was elected to the office of Harrison County Clerk of Circuit Court.

“She was a really hard worker,” Haggard said, “and she was never cross with anyone.”

Haggard said he had heard Mathes had been ill and she and Jesse had missed attending a recent event; however, he said, Jesse had still donated several items for the event auction.

“It seems like I’ve known her all my life,” said Haggard, who recalled meeting the Matheses when he was about 37 and was first running for public office. “Barbara was a good, honest, hard-working person. If she decided to do something, she went all the way for the people.”

A native of Harrison County, Mathes was the daughter of the late John and Inez Helfrich Askren. Her obituary appears on page A4.

Mathes’ funeral was Saturday at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
