Lady Panthers claim consolation bracket with pair of Saturday wins

The host Corydon Central Lady Panthers captured the consolation bracket of the Battle at the First Capital after suffering an overtime loss to Providence in the opening round Friday night, 52-46.

“Tough loss to Providence in overtime, but we will learn from it,” said coach Michael Uhl. “Good wins against Tell City and Southridge.”

Emily Harbaugh scored 15 points, and Lillian Wolfe added 11 as Corydon Central (3-1) held off Southridge 46-39 in the fifth-place game Saturday night.

Freshman Ava Weber paced the Lady Panthers, scoring 23 points in each of the other two games. Weber got to the free throw line 14 times, making 11 in a 53-34 win over Tell City on Saturday afternoon. She made 11-of-12 charity tosses in the Providence loss.

“We really struggled with turnovers and various lineups in the Providence and Tell City games, but seemed to figure it out against Southridge,” said Uhl. “Got great minutes off the bench from Katie Fessel, Kayla Willoughby and Autum Anderson against Southridge.”

Uhl hopes to build off Saturday’s momentum headed into a week that features three games in a five-day span starting with Paoli last night (Tuesday), at Charlestown on Friday and hosting New Albany on Saturday.

Uhl credited his assistant coaches for some timely suggestions last weekend.

“Josh (Conrad) and Kayla (Carnley) had good adjustments during the tournament that got us back moving forward when we started to struggle,” he said.
