Lanesville student dies in single-vehicle crash
A senior at Lanesville Junior-Senior High School was killed in a single-vehicle crash last Wednesday night.
According to a crash report by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept., Thomas A. Elder, 18, was traveling east on Grange Hall Road when his 2000 Buick LeSabre left the road and hit a tree before the road intersects with S.R. 62. The crash occurred at about 8:25.
Elder, who was a member of the track and basketball teams at Lanesville, was wearing a seat belt and the vehicle’s air bag did deploy.
During a vigil the following night for Elder at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lanesville, where Thomas was a member, his father, Mark Elder, was given a Lanesville police badge and a copy of a declaration signed by Tom Walter, chief of the Lanesville Police Dept., posthumously awarding the title and position of police officer to Thomas Elder.
Walter, who is the uncle of the deceased, said Thomas Elder had made it known to him and others that his goal after high school was to pursue a career in law enforcement.
“He had been seeking answers and guidance from me for nearly two years,” Walter said. “I feel that with the proper training, he would have made an outstanding, caring, compassionate and dedicated officer.”
On Monday morning, numerous police cars escorted Elder’s body from Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon to St. Mary Catholic Church for the funeral. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
