Needler/Tyree on to tennis regional

South Central senior duo Zach Needler and Austin Tyree kept their boys’ tennis season going after advancing through the Indiana High School Athletic Association individual sectional in doubles.
Despite the Rebels not advancing beyond the semi-final of the New Albany Sectional, Needler/Tyree moved on after a win over Lanesville’s No. 1 doubles squad. The individual portion of the tournament was the next stop for Needler/Tyree, which features only those No. 1 singles and doubles players unbeaten in postseason play.
Playing at Silver Creek last Tuesday, Needler/Tyree’s next opponent was the Christian Academy of Indiana pair of Ethan Sanders and Myles Morgan. Holding a regular season win over the CAI tandem, Needler/Tyree had to regroup after dropping a first-set tiebreaker to fall behind.
The next two sets were all Needler/Tyree, who posted a pair of 6-1 scores to earn a spot in the Bedford North Lawrence Regional. The South Central top pair’s record improved to 11-2.
The BNL Regional will take place Saturday, starting with the morning session at 10. The afternoon session will begin at 2. Awaiting Needler/Tyree is the Hauser doubles team of Levi Golfer and Caleb Hoover.
In the opposite semi-final match, Northeast Dubois’ Ethan Ziegler and Luke Harder (17-3) will face Castle’s Ethan White and Kunhai Shah (12-3).
