Mercedes Elizabeth Ratliff, 91, Westpoint, formerly of Tippecanoe County, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, at Brookdale Carmel.

Born Nov. 19, 1927, in Switz City, she was the daughter of the late Lela Ethel Gough McCollum and Benjamin Franklin McCollum.

She was valedictorian of the Staunton High School class of 1945, an educator, graduating from Indiana State University with a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in home economics and elementary education, and taught 36 years mostly in Tippecanoe County, retiring from Mintonye Elementary School. She volunteered in numerous church and service organizations and was a longtime member of the Lafayette Grace United Methodist Church.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Milton Edward Ratliff.

Survivors include three sons, Lance, Daniel and Peter; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Georgetown.

Memorial service: Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 12:30 p.m. at Tunnel Hill Christian Church in Georgetown.

The family suggests memorial gifts to the Muncie Missions in Muncie and to the Lafayette Grace United Methodist Church in Lafayette.
