They aren’t really Andy Pappano’s kids, but eight was enough.
The North Harrison boys’ swimming coach took his roster of eight swimmers to the Mid-Southern Conference meet last Thursday and came away with the top spot. The Cougars posted a team score of 282 to finish well ahead of runner-up Corydon Central (159).
‘We had some strong swimmers today for a team of eight,’ Pappano said. ‘I couldn’t be happier for them.’
Taking place at the YMCA of Harrison County, the host Cougars got the meet started off quickly by holding off Charlestown in the 200-yard medley relay for first place in 2:04.90. It was the foursome of Cody Vernon, Darren Simpson, Javen Johnson and Colton Watson getting the job done.
North Harrison’s lone senior ” Jasper Burden ” turned in a solid day in his final MSC appearance, winning four events. The two individual events Burden captured couldn’t have been more different. After winning the 50-yard freestyle sprint (25.33 seconds), Burden turned around to win the meet’s longest event, the 500 freestyle.
In the distance race, Burden swam in 6:01.02, holding off teammate Javen Johnson, who was the runner-up.
‘I was really proud of my 500 today,’ Burden said. ‘I’ve dropped a lot of time over the course of the season. I think everyone didn’t necessarily swim in what they are strongest in but were able to swim in everything we needed to score points.’
Following the 500-yard race, Burden entered the water again to swim the anchor of the 200 free relay. Joined by Matt Jones, Jordan Johnson and Vernon, the Cougars’ squad combined to swim in 1:45.65. Corydon Central (Oliver Zink, Evan Theis, Chris Smythe and Hunter Crain) was second.
It was North Harrison first, Corydon Central second in the meet-ending 400 free relay as well. The Cougars entered Jordan and Javen Johnson, Burden and Jones to take the race comfortably in 4:03.10. Corydon Central went in 4:15.57 with Zink, Theis, Smythe and Crain each swimming a leg.
‘Jasper Burden, his accomplishment was big,’ Pappano said. ‘He showed some leadership this year and today. It’s a total group of really good guys. Jordan Johnson is one that has really worked his tail off this year to improve. They’d done a lot of work to build up.’
Crain had an impressive day for Corydon Central as well, picking up two individual wins. In the 200 individual medley, Crain went in 2:20.42 for the top spot. Javen Johnson was third for North Harrison.
Later in the meet, Crain took the 100 butterfly in 58.74 seconds. Jones was second.
Watson scored an individual win as well for the Cougars. He took the 100 backstroke in 1:23.81. Teammate Matt Moorman was third.
‘It’s my last year swimming with this team, and I am super proud of them today,’ said Burden, who was looking forward to going out to eat in celebration. ‘This was a good meet for us.’
Jordan Johnson earned second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:08.52) and the 100 freestyle (58.43). Corydon Central’s Chris Smythe was third in the 100 free.
‘We are only (graduating) Jasper after this year, so we still have a few years for the younger talent to improve,’ Pappano said. ‘I hope we will stay on top for a few years.’
The Floyd Central Boys’ Swimming Sectional will take place Thursday, Feb. 14 (swimming preliminaries), and Saturday, Feb. 16 (swimming consolations and finals along with diving), at Highland Hills Middle School. The girls’ sectional will take place Thursday and Saturday at the same location.
