Emergency responders and law enforcement officers responded to an injury crash involving a South Harrison Community School Corp. bus Monday afternoon along Old Forest Road west of Corydon.
The school bus had been traveling west and ultimately slid off the roadway down a wooded embankment.
There were 18 children on the bus at the time of the crash, which was approximately 3:40. Seven children were transported to Harrison County Hospital in Corydon with what appeared to be minor or non-life threatening injuries, according to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept.
‘It appears the rainy weather and roadway conditions may have been contributing factors in the accident,’ the report said.
A fresh coat of oil had recently been put on the road by the Harrison County Highway Dept. as part of fog seal. Signs warned motorists of the fresh oil.
The crash remains under investigation.
Additionally, two good Samaritans, traveling in separate vehicles, who saw the school bus off the road, stopped in the roadway to help. One of the vehicles was struck in the rear by another civilian vehicle, causing the stopped vehicle to crash into the other stopped vehicle. Two adults from those vehicles also were transported to HCH with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
Parents of students on the school bus were notified and reunited with their children.
The sheriff’s department had not released the names of any of the driver’s as of press time yesterday (Tuesday).
