Dr. James William (Bill) McDonald Jr., 47, Hardinsburg, died Monday Jan. 29, 2018.
Born April 26, 1970, in Bedford, he was the son of James William McDonald Sr. of Hardinsburg and the late Lois Elaine Buck McDonald.
He attended Paoli schools, graduated from West Washington High School as valedictorian of his class in 1988 and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1994 from Purdue University, where he was president of the veterinary school student body and received the top surgeon award and compassionate care award. He opened his own veterinary practice in January 1995. He was elected to the Paoli school board in 1996 and had served as president for many years. He was a 10-year 4-H member and continued to be a volunteer and donor to the Orange County 4-H programs. He was a partner with his family in McDonald Farms and South Central Collision Center and sole owner of McDonald Veterinary Clinic. He was a member of Paoli Christian Church in Paoli, Indiana Veterinary Medical Association and American Veterinary Medical Association.
Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Noel and Pearl McDonald, Frank and Hazel Buck and Donnel Sipe.
Survivors in addition to his father include his wife of 20 years, the former Lindsay Rutherford; his stepmother, Barbara McDonald of Hardinsburg; grandmother, Virginia Sipe of Portland; mother-in-law Louanne and Lashbrook (Jon) of Paoli; father-in-law, Max Rutherford (Linda) of Paoli; two sons, Jacob William McDonald and Joseph Thomas McDonald, both at home; a daughter, Madelyn Jo McDonald, at home; two brothers, John R. (Bob) McDonald (Paula) of Hardinsburg and Peter David McDonald (Autumn) of Noblesville; a sister, Susan McDonald Umpleby (Dave) of Hardinsburg; a sister-in-law, Leah Becht (Al) of Paoli; a brother-in-law, Marc Rutherford (Dorothy) of Paoli; and nine nieces and nephews, Alleigh and Luke Becht, Rachel and Lauren Umpleby, Megan McDonald and Charleigh, Camryn, Chayse and Cruze McDonald.
Visitation: Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 1, after 10 a.m. at Paoli Christian Church.
Funeral: Thursday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. at Paoli Christian Church with interment in the Hardinsburg Community Cemetery.
Officiants: Brothers Rob Lee, George Key and Gary Swick.
Arrangements: Dillman-Scott Funeral Home in Paoli.
