Frances J. Hurst Madden, 81, Fort Wayne, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2018.
The daughter of the late Parker Hurst and Winifred Hurst Miller, she was born in New Albany and grew up in Corydon.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in social work and a master’s degree in education from Indiana University. She taught elementary education, was a Webelo den mother and a Girl Scout leader and later, in Dilley, Texas, where she lived for 12 years, was a substitute teacher and a caregiver for developmentally delayed adults and the elderly. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for many years and later Harrison Avenue Christian Church in Corydon and, more recently, attended Alliance Community Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Beth Moore; a sister, Cathy Buschemeyer (John); a brother, Bill Hurst (Johni); four nieces, Sarah, Gretchen, Leia and Maleisha; cousins, Steve, Waid, Rita, Chuck, David, Phil and Sandy; other cousins; great-nieces; and a great-nephew.
Visitation: Friday, Jan. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 20, after 1 p.m. at Alliance Community Church in Fort Wayne.
Funeral: Saturday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at the church with burial in Covington Memorial Gardens in Fort Wayne.
Celebration of Life service: Saturday, April 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with lunch at noon, at Harrison Springs Health Campus in Corydon.
The family suggests memorial gifts to Alliance Community Church in Fort Wayne or the Visiting Nurse Grief Center.
