SC can’t match Avon in final

The South Central girls’ basketball team was the lone Class 1A representative Thursday at the Brown County Invitational, a one-day, four-team event.
Facing the host, South Central overcame a slow first quarter to pull away from Brown County in the second half for a 62-45 victory. Moving on to the championship, the Lady Rebels were no match for the 4A Avon team that went on to win 74-41.
Against Brown County, South Central was led by Jenna Baelz putting together 10 points and 10 rebounds. It was balanced scoring from the Lady Rebels with four reaching double figures. Jordan Renn led all scorers with 20 points, while Lexie Knear tallied 17 points and pulled down four rebounds. Ally Davis, meanwhile, contributed 15 points and four assists.
‘After a terrible first quarter against Brown County, we were able to regroup and turn in a strong second and fourth quarters,’ South Central coach Randall Schoen said. ‘We had good, balanced scoring with Jenna having 10 and 10.’
Brown County jumped out to a 15-5 lead after one quarter of play. It was the second quarter going in favor of South Central (22-7) to allow the Lady Rebels a 27-22 half-time edge. South Central, aided by four Knear triples, pulled away in the second half, including a 23-point final frame.
Having a look at Avon freshman Zakia Rasheed, the South Central girls were unable to contain the talented forward. She went on to finish with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists, leading to a 74-41 Avon triumph in the championship.
‘With Avon, we knew we would have to shoot the ball well to have a chance, which we didn’t do along with them shooting well. It didn’t make for a good mix,’ Schoen said. ‘They were much bigger and athletic; made for a terrible match-up for us.’
Electric from the field, Avon shot 61 percent from the field and also out-rebounded South Central 41-15. Haley Nichols had 10 points and eight rebounds for Avon.
Avon jumped out to a 21-13 lead after one quarter and had no problem extending its lead.
For the Lady Rebels, Davis had a game-best 22 points, making good on all seven of her free-throw attempts. She also pulled seven boards. Knear contributed 12 points and had four steals.
