An early morning fire Christmas Eve destroyed a Corydon sawmill.
Jon Saulman, chief of the Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Dept., said neighbors of the Sanders Sawmill on North Gethsemane Road west of Corydon alerted property owners of the fire just before 4 Sunday morning.
Among the first firefighters on the scene, Saulman said the business was fully engulfed when he arrived ‘and had been for some time.’
Ramsey Volunteer Fire Dept. was initially called for mutual aid then Saulman later requested New Middletown and Heth Volunteer Fire departments to assist with additional tankers.
‘The property owners had said they were doing some welding inside the building the day before,’ on Saturday, Saulman said.
A couple of trailers next to the sawmill were saved from destruction, Saulman said, and the residence on the property was not in any immediate danger.
‘I was told (the business) was not insured,’ Saulman said.
Nobody was injured, the fire chief said, and firefighters cleared the scene at 7:10 a.m.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
