Paving the way to a second-place showing at the North Harrison Invitational on Saturday, the host Cougars placed both doubles pairs in the championship round. A No. 2 doubles title by Jacob Harmon and Logan Foley gave the Cougars the lone Harrison County champ at the eight-team boys’ tennis event.
In the team standings, Forest Park had two champions and the same in runners-up to tally 43 points. North Harrison held off Crawford County by one point for second place, scoring 34. Lanesville (17) placed fifth, South Central (14) sixth and Corydon Central (12) seventh.
Harmon and Foley dropped only one set across three matches. The lone came in the final versus Crawford County’s Preston Coleman and Trevor Harvey, who took the opening set 7-5. Rallying back, Harmon/Foley took the second set 6-2 before snagging the third 10-6 in a super tie-breaker.
The path to the championship for Harmon/Foley included defeating Forest Park 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-final and South Central’s team of Will Weber and Jake Daugherty 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round.
Weber/Daugherty bounced back to win matches over Corydon Central (Tristan Seacat and Peyton Adams) 8-5 and Salem’s Josiah Gahimer and Gavin Fleming 8-4 to earn fourth place. Taking third place was Lanesville’s team of Jacob Graves and Gabe Gowens. They toppled Forest Park 8-5 in the placement match. Graves/Gowens won the opening-round match 6-2, 6-3 over Gahimer/Fleming.
At top doubles, North Harrison’s Zach Outcalt and Ben Book rolled to the final with wins over Crawford County’s Gavin Coleman and Nick Higgins (6-2, 6-0) and South Central’s Brady Kuchenbrod and Chase Schoen (7-5, 6-2).
In a tight final, Outcalt/Book weren’t able to defeat Forest Park’s team of Hurst/Welp, falling 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.
Falling to the consolation round, Kuchenbrod and Schoen went on to defeat Lanesville’s Ethan Purdy and Jack Kaufer 8-2 for third place. Fourth place in No. 2 doubles was won by Corydon Central’s Jake Fields and Blake Wiseman (8-3). Kuchenbrod/Schoen and Purdy/Kaufer landed first-round victories.
Playing No. 1 singles, North Harrison’s Cameron Voyles rolled in his opening-round match versus Lanesville’s Dylan Schoen 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semi-final. Voyles held strong in the first set versus Salem’s Landon Suvak but eventually lost 7-5 then 6-1 in the second. Suvak went on to win the No. 1 singles title.
Voyles came back in the consolation, defeating Corydon Central’s Shaun Showalter 8-5 for third place. Showalter placed fifth. Showalter earned a first-round victory over Christian Academy of Indiana’s Daniel Boesing 6-4, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, first-round victories were had by North Harrison’s Ben Davis (6-4, 6-4 over Salem’s Evan Shelby) and Lanesville’s Ethan Schickel (7-6, 9-7, 6-1 over South Central’s Zach Needler). Neither Davis nor Schickel could win in the semi-final, setting up a meeting for third place. David outlasted Schickel 8-5 to take third, moving the Eagles’ player to fifth place.
At No. 2 singles, Corydon Central’s Zeke Hansen picked up a pair of consolation wins to take fourth place. His placement round saw him top Needler 8-4.
Lanesville’s Jonas Powers participated in No. 3 singles. He defeated Corydon Central’s Oliver Zink 6-1, 6-2. Powers dropped his next two matches, including the placement to CAI’s Caleb Schultz 8-5 to settle for fifth.
