Nolena Hortense Love Stephens, 87, died Tuesday, June 27, 2017.
Born April 11, 1930, in Dogwood, she was the daughter of the late Irma Hortense Duggins Love and Clyde Everett Love.
She taught Sunday school, led a Cub Scout troop and coached a girls’ softball team. In 1970, she graduated from the University of Michigan with an elementary education degree, earned a master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Specialist’s Degree in education from William Carey University. She became principal of Bayou View Elementary School in Gulfport following time spent teaching there and at Mississippi City Elementary School. In 1991, she was a guest of former President George H.W. Bush at an event in Washington, D.C., honoring drug-free schools of the Southeast. She retired in 1996 but continued to substitute teach.
Survivors include her husband, Col. Lawrence Edward Stephens Sr.; a brother, Dwight Everett Love; three children, Deanne Love Stephens, Lawrence Edward Stephens Jr. (Kappy) and Montgomery Dean Stephens (Laurie); and five grandchildren, Rachel Love Nuwer (Paul Dix), Lawrence Lyle Stephens, Sarah Catherine Stephens, Amelia Joy Nuwer and PageAnn Love Fletcher (Luke).
Funeral: Sunday, July 2, at 4 p.m. at Riemann Family Funeral Home in Biloxi, Miss., with burial Monday, July 3, at 9 a.m. in the Biloxi National Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the Alzheimer’s Association.
