Saturday afternoon it was an invader team that captured the annual Bud Bennett Invitational at Old Capital Golf Club in Corydon. Individual honors, however, went to a home product.
Corydon Central sophomore Joey Wiseman went low on his home course, finishing his 18-hole round with a 2-under par 72. Wiseman was 4-under through 13 holes to take the lead and held on for medalist honors in a talented field.
Castle High School ‘ a newcomer to the Bud Bennett ” came in with a team score of 306. It was low enough to hold off Floyd Central’s 318 on the chilly and soggy tournament. Jasper (331) came in third, followed by New Albany (342) and Corydon Central (355) in the 11-team field.
North Harrison placed eighth with a 434 and Lanesville 10th with a 468.
Wiseman’s best nine occurred on the front side, carding a 34. Two strokes behind Wiseman was a pair of Castle golfers: Austin and Adam Bratton, each shooting even-par 72s. Carson Pierce of Jasper was fourth with a 75.
Ben Johnson aided Corydon Central’s team score with a round of 83, playing both sides with a steady 41 and 42. Also for the Panthers, Jarrett Alcorn finished with a 97, followed by Chris Carroll (105) and Cameron Buechele (117).
North Harrison, dealing the golfers on a senior trip, shot 434 as a squad, led by Jason Schmidt’s 95. Other North Harrison competitors were Christian Magee (110), Blake Fawver (113), Scotty Poole (116) and Austin Wilson (120).
Lanesville sent out four, led by Noah Winstead’s 114. Also competing were Carson Kaake (116), Dylan Schoen (116) and Brent Hardin (122).
Floyd Central’s best round belonged to Dylan Zink (78). Jack Lilly, the Bud Bennett’s third-place finisher a year ago, turned in an 82.
