SC opens tennis season with sweep
Dealing with spurts of gusty winds, South Central took care of business on the tennis courts Monday, defeating Crawford County 5-0.
It was the girls’ season opener for both squads, with South Central easily defending its home courts.
At No. 2 doubles, Kelsey Dunn and Jenna Baelz made quick work of Shaylon Kannapel and Kara Knight, posting a pair of 6-0 scores.
Soon after the doubles team left the playing surface, South Central’s Alexis Knear polished off her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Abigail Pierson.
South Central wrapped up the team win with Brooklyn Woertz scoring a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Josie Rosier at the No. 2 singles slot while Maddy Brashear won 6-0, 6-4 over Jordan Ford at No. 3.
South Central’s top doubles team of Gracie Riley and Rachel Smith came away with the win in a competitive match with Bailey Bean and Alexis Shelton, 6-3, 7-5.
North Harrison, coming off its second straight Mid-Southern Conference championship, opened the new season with a 4-1 home win over county-foe Lanesville on Monday.
Sisters Payton and Sydney Fravel rolled in singles action. Payton defeated Ivy Cooke 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 while Sydney topped Hailee Parsons 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.
The Lady Cats completed the sweep of the singles court with Lindsey Schumaker defeating Skyler Blank 6-2, 6-1.
Lanesville and North Harrison split in doubles. Lanesville’s Emma Peele and Abby Blagg won at No. 1, 6-0, 7-5, over North Harrison’s Kelsey Bruce and Rachel Lett.
At No. 2 doubles, North Harrison’s Elsie Gasaway and Sarah Yost took down Olivia Johnson and Emily Schoen 6-0, 6-4.
