Pairings set for girls’ basketball tournament

From Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the opening week’s pairings for the 42nd annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls’ Basketball State Tournament presented by the Indiana Fever and Indiana Pacers were announced Sunday evening.
North Harrison, ranked No. 1 in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Class 3A poll, seeks to defend not only their sectional title, but a state runner-up finish from a year ago.
The Lady Cats (18-1) will open play in the Class 3A Corydon Central Sectional on Tuesday, Jan. 31, versus Silver Creek (8-12). In the regular season, on Nov. 23, North Harrison defeated Silver Creek 76-36.
In terms of quality teams, of the sectional’s seven teams, all but one currently have records above .500. It’s the only sectional within 3A to make that claim while all the others feature at least two teams with losing records.
Drawing the bye, Corydon Central (11-9) will host the winner of the North Harrison-Silver Creek match-up in the semi-final.
The opposite path to the semi-final in the Corydon Central Sectional will see Brownstown Central (13-8) take on Scottsburg (12-7) while Charlestown (10-9) will face Salem (12-8).
In Class 1A, South Central seeks its ninth sectional title when it heads to the six-team New Washington Sectional. The Lady Rebels (12-6) drew the bye and will await the Shawe Memorial (11-9) versus Rock Creek Academy (4-14) winner.
South Central holds a 55-32 win over Shawe Memorial and will face Rock Creek on Jan. 26 prior to the tournament.
Similarly, Lanesville (5-15) drew a bye. The Lady Eagles will meet either Christian Academy of Indiana (6-10) or New Washington (9-11). During the regular season, Lanesville defeated CAI (48-46) and lost to New Washington (59-46).
Crawford County, playing in the Class 2A Sectional 46 at Providence, will open up against Eastern (Pekin). The Lady Pack lost to Eastern 63-50 in their second game of the season.
Playing on its home floor, Floyd Central will face Jennings County on opening night of the Class 4A Sectional 15. The two Hoosier Hills Conference foes will face each other in the regular season on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Jennings County.
Sectional games are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Jan. 31, and run through Saturday, Feb. 4, with the regional round slated for Feb. 11 and semistates on Feb. 18. The four state championship games that make up the state finals will be played at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 25.
A total of 397 teams ‘ 100 4A teams, 101 3A teams, 99 2A teams and 96 1A teams ‘ are to participate in the tourney.
Sectional tickets cost $6 per session or $10 for all sessions.
